Why Krakow Should Be Your Next City Break
Krakow survived the Second World War almost entirely intact, leaving behind one of the most beautifully preserved medieval city centres in Europe. Unlike many European capitals, it manages to stay genuinely affordable, genuinely authentic, and genuinely spectacular, all at once. UNESCO designated the entire Old Town a World Heritage Site in 1978, and it is easy to see why.
The Main Market Square
Sitting on a rocky hill above the Vistula River, Wawel Royal Castle was the seat of Polish kings for five centuries. The Cathedral inside the complex is the burial place of Polish monarchs and national heroes. Climbing the Sigismund Tower to see the country's largest bell is a highlight. Allow at least half a day, there is far more to see than most first-time visitors expect.
Wawel Castle and Cathedral
Sitting on a rocky hill above the Vistula River, Wawel Royal Castle is the most iconic landmark in Krakow and one of the most significant in all of Poland. For five centuries, this was the seat of Polish kings, and the buildings that remain are a testament to the extraordinary ambition of that era. The Cathedral, located within the castle complex, is the burial place of Polish monarchs and national heroes, and climbing the Sigismund Tower to see the country's largest bell is a moment that stays with you. Allow at least half a day here, there is far more to explore than most first-time visitors expect.
Kazimierz, The Jewish Quarter
A short walk from the Old Town, Kazimierz carries a powerful history explored through the Galicia Jewish Museum and the Old Synagogue. Today it is also Krakow's most creative neighbourhood, independent galleries, vintage shops, excellent restaurants, and some of the best bars in the city. Plac Nowy square is the home of Zapiekanka, Krakow's famous street food, a toasted baguette loaded with mushrooms, cheese, and toppings.
Schindler's Factory
The Fabryka Emalia Oskara Schindlera is one of the most important museums in Europe. The exhibition inside documents life in Krakow under Nazi occupation from 1939 to 1945 with extraordinary depth and detail. It is not easy viewing, but it is essential. Book timed entry slots well in advance as they fill up fast.
Day Trips, Auschwitz-Birkenau and the Wieliczka Salt Mine
Two of Poland's most visited sites are both within easy reach of Krakow. The Wieliczka Salt Mine, just 15 kilometres away, is an extraordinary underground world of tunnels and chapels carved entirely from salt over 700 years, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right. Auschwitz-Birkenau, 70 kilometres west of the city, is the most important Holocaust memorial in the world and a full-day experience that requires emotional preparation. Book guided tours for both well in advance.
Food and Drink
Polish food is one of Europe's most underappreciated cuisines and Krakow is the best place to discover it. Pierogi, soft dumplings stuffed with potato, cheese, meat, or sauerkraut, are the city's signature dish. Żurek, a sour rye soup served in a bread bowl, and Bigos, a hearty hunter's stew, are equally unmissable. A full restaurant meal for two with drinks rarely costs more than £25.
Nightlife
Krakow has one of the best and most affordable nightlife scenes in Europe. The Old Town is packed with clubs and bars around the Main Square, ideal for a first night out. Kazimierz has a slower, more atmospheric energy, bars spilling onto cobbled streets, live jazz in low-lit basements, and a creative crowd that makes it feel unlike anywhere else. A beer in a bar costs between £1.50 and £3.
Practical Information for UK Travellers
Ryanair, Wizz Air, and easyJet fly direct daily from London and several UK regional airports. Flight time is around 2 hours 30 minutes. A long weekend covers the Old Town, Wawel, and Kazimierz comfortably, allow five to six days if you want to include the day trips. Spring and autumn offer the best weather with fewer crowds. December is magical for the Christmas markets. Poland uses the Polish Złoty, not the Euro, and the city is almost entirely walkable.
