Cambodia has opened the Techo International Airport, a $2 billion facility located about 20 kilometers south of Phnom Penh, in Kandal Province. The inauguration happened on September 9, 2025, marking an important step in the country's efforts to improve its tourism infrastructure.

Designed by the British architectural firm Foster + Partners and built by China's Third Engineering Bureau Group, the airport is a partnership between the Cambodian government and the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation. It replaces the nearly 70-year-old Phnom Penh International Airport, which had a single runway and is now for military and emergency use.

The Techo International Airport has three runways and can handle 13 million passengers each year at first. There are plans to increase its capacity to 30 million by 2030 and up to 50 million by 2050. The facility includes 22 gates, room for 40 aircraft, a central garden, and an on-site solar farm to support sustainability.

The opening of the Techo International Airport fits into Cambodia's broader strategy to boost its tourism sector, which saw a 23% rise in international visitors in 2024, reaching 6.7 million. This development follows the opening of the Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport in 2023, further solidifying the country's position as a top travel destination in Southeast Asia.

Despite this positive progress, Cambodia faces challenges in its tourism goals, including ongoing border tensions with neighboring Thailand. Still, the Techo International Airport represents a major investment in the country's future, aiming to bring in more international tourists and strengthen the economy.

For travelers heading to Cambodia, the Techo International Airport provides modern amenities and better connections, improving the overall travel experience.
