Summary

Lilongwe, the enchanting capital city of Malawi, captivates travellers with its perfect blend of cultural heritage, natural beauty, and vibrant local life. Despite its modest size, Lilongwe offers you an array of iconic landmarks and must-visit places that are the gateway to the city’s wonderful life.

As diverse as the cultural offerings of the city, a culinary journey is a must in Lilongwe. Fresh seafood is the hot spot in local dishes like nsima, a traditional maize porridge served with many flavorful accompaniments such as chambo, a local fish delicacy. Wander through the bust, in markets like the Old Town Market, to experience the local life through the fresh produce, and local crafts. When the night dawns, Lilongwe's nightlife comes alive with an exotic energy that runs through the city streets.

Good to Know
Visa
UK passport holders visiting Lilongwe for tourism do not require a visa for stays of up to 30 days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your date of arrival and must contain at least two blank pages. Some travellers may choose to obtain the KAZA Univisa (USD $50), which is valid for 30 days and allows multiple entries between Zambia and Zimbabwe; however, this is not necessary for entry into Malawi alone. Upon arrival, you may be asked to provide proof of return or onward travel, as well as evidence of sufficient funds for your stay.
Vaccinations
To enter Malawi, a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from a country where the disease is present. Routine vaccinations such as MMR, DTP, Polio, Influenza, and COVID‑19 are not mandatory but are strongly recommended. If you are planning to travel to rural areas, you should also consider vaccinations for Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Rabies. Malaria is prevalent throughout Malawi, so it is important to consult your GP about appropriate antimalarial medication, insect repellent, and the use of mosquito nets.
Currency
Malawi uses the Malawian Kwacha (MWK), denoted by the symbol K and subdivided into 100 tambala. Common banknotes include K20, K50, K100, K200, K500, and K1,000, while coins are rarely used. Although ATMs are available in cities like Lilongwe, many local businesses and markets are cash-only, so it’s advisable to carry a sufficient amount of kwacha when travelling.
