Holidaymakers and winter travellers passing through Zurich Airport faced major disruptions. Long lines at passport control and security checkpoints caused delays, leading some passengers to miss their flights.
Travellers reported extended waiting times to clear border checks, with queues stretching across terminals during peak hours. Many social media posts described wait times at border control and security as unusually long for a typically efficient European hub, especially during peak ski season when demand is high.
The new biometric Entry/Exit System (EES) in Europe requires non-EU travellers to have their fingerprints and facial images taken at passport control. This has been linked to slower processing times at Swiss and other EU airports, including Geneva and Zurich. Travellers from the UK, the United States, and other non-Schengen countries have experienced delays due to these new procedures, which are still being rolled out.
These delays have added to the travel disruptions affecting several major European airports this winter. Heavy weather and an increased number of flights have created congestion and operational challenges. Reports from Switzerland show that both Zurich and nearby airports have seen more delayed and rescheduled flights, with some connections missed due to slow passenger processing.
Passengers caught in the chaos expressed frustration over the lack of clear information and long waits, especially at border control booths. Crowds were reported to build quickly around peak arrival times for ski holiday flights, adding stress for those trying to catch tight onward connections.
Airport and airline officials suggest that travellers allow extra time during peak season. They recommend arriving at least two to three hours before departure and staying informed about health and border requirements to minimize the chance of missing flights due to long queues.
Officials are monitoring the situation and may adjust staffing as needed, but travellers are encouraged to plan ahead during busy periods.
