Rome has opened two new metro stations on its Metro C line. These stations make public transport more accessible and serve as cultural attractions that highlight archaeological discoveries from below the city.
The newly opened stops, Colosseo/Fori Imperiali and Porta Metronia, were revealed on Tuesday after more than a decade of construction, delays, and rising costs. Officials have labeled the stations as "archeo-stations," combining modern transit with museum-like exhibits of ancient Roman artifacts.
Located near the famous Colosseum, the Colosseo/Fori Imperiali station displays artifacts such as pottery, stone wells, and various antiques. It also features exhibits that teach tourists about the history hidden beneath Rome's streets.
Excavations at Porta Metronia revealed mosaics and frescoes as well as the remnants of a military barracks from the second century AD. A museum space within the station is set to open in the coming months, giving commuters and visitors a chance to explore these discoveries up close.
Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri stated that the project shows how building infrastructure can work alongside preserving cultural heritage. It turns daily transit areas into attractions that honor the city’s ancient past.
Rome's transportation system has reached a significant turning point with the extension of the Metro C line. It complements Lines A and B and provides a more direct link between the city's eastern suburbs and the historic center. More extensions are planned to improve connectivity across the capital.
Both tourists and residents have welcomed the new stations, noting they provide convenience for travelers while offering a glimpse into Rome’s rich history right beneath their feet.
