Kolkata, September 23, 2025. Continuous heavy rainfall has thrown Kolkata into chaos. Several parts of the city are submerged, transportation networks are crippled, and at least seven lives have been lost. Officials confirmed that four victims died from electrocution after coming into contact with live wires amid the waterlogged streets.
Widespread Waterlogging and Disruption
From Beniapukur and Park Circus to Gariahat, Behala, and College Street, major intersections and residential neighborhoods are under knee- to waist-deep water. Underpasses and main roads have turned into streams, with cars and two-wheelers stranded for hours. Public buses, taxis, and autos are struggling to navigate the flooded roads, while many residents must wade through the floodwaters.
Rainfall Records and Forecast
Several areas in southern Kolkata recorded over 250 mm of rain within hours, with Garia Kamdahari logging more than 330 mm. Other neighborhoods, such as Jodhpur Park, Kalighat, and Ballygunge, also experienced exceptionally heavy rainfall. The Meteorological Department has issued red, orange, and yellow alerts for Kolkata and nearby districts. More heavy rain is expected in the coming days.
Official Response and Criticism
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has sent teams with pumps and emergency equipment to clear the waterlogged areas. However, drainage efforts are being hindered by swollen rivers and canals that are pushing water back into the city. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee described the rainfall as unprecedented and criticized the poor maintenance of both power lines and water management systems. The state government has announced financial aid and compensation for the families of the deceased.
Impact on Daily Life
Schools and universities will remain closed on Tuesday due to the severe weather. Calcutta University and Jadavpur University have suspended classes. Air travel has also faced disruptions; flights were delayed, and one was diverted to Bhubaneswar early in the morning. Authorities warned that the afternoon high tide could worsen waterlogging, delaying relief efforts further.
Festivities and Public Safety Concerns
Preparations for Durga Puja, Kolkata’s biggest annual festival, have been significantly affected. Several pandals are inundated, and organizers fear that further rainfall could derail celebrations. Authorities urged citizens to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep away from flooded areas and exposed electrical lines.
A City on Edge
For many residents, the flooding brings back memories of some of the worst monsoon inundations in recent years. Locals reported water entering homes, shops, and even kitchens of community shelters. Relief teams and volunteers are distributing food and providing assistance, but the extent of the flooding has left many without immediate help.
With forecasts predicting continued heavy rainfall in the coming days, Kolkata remains on high alert. The city’s situation has highlighted the urgent need for better drainage systems, improved flood preparedness, and safer power infrastructure in the face of increasingly unpredictable weather.
