Eighteen passengers were hospitalized Monday afternoon after a mobile lounge at Washington Dulles International Airport collided with a terminal dock. The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. at Concourse D, according to airport officials.
The passengers were on the mobile lounge, a shuttle-like vehicle that transports travelers between terminals and aircraft. Emergency responders quickly arrived, and all 18 individuals were taken to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority confirmed that the collision did not disrupt flight operations and that airport services continued as usual. An investigation into the cause of the crash is in progress.
Witnesses reported a sudden jolt when the vehicle struck the dock, which led to immediate medical attention for the passengers. Authorities are reviewing vehicle records, safety procedures, and possible mechanical issues to find out how the accident happened.
Airport officials stated that mobile lounges are an important part of Dulles' passenger transport system and are regularly inspected for safety. “Our main concern is the well-being of the passengers, and we are working closely with emergency services to ensure everyone receives proper care,” the statement said.
Passengers traveling through Concourse D may face minor delays as the investigation goes on, but the airport assured that other terminal operations remain unaffected.
